Can You Get Laser Hair Removal in Summer? 5 Things Calgary Clients Need to Know

It’s one of the most common questions I get every spring: “Can I still get laser hair removal in the summer?”

The short answer is yes — absolutely. But the longer answer matters, because summer does come with a few extra steps that make the difference between a great result and an avoidable problem.

As a laser specialist at Cool Laser Skin Studio in Calgary, I’ve been treating clients through summer for years. Here are the 5 things every Calgary client needs to know about getting laser hair removal this season.

1. The Real Concern With Summer Laser Hair Removal (It’s Not What You Think)

Most people assume summer laser hair removal is off the table. It’s not — but the concern is legitimate: tanned or recently sun-exposed skin.

When your skin has been in the sun, there’s heat residue sitting in the skin. Applying a laser on top of that heat can lead to burns or unwanted pigmentation changes. This is why we don’t treat freshly tanned skin that’s been out in the sun for hours the day before.

But here’s the thing — avoiding a burn is completely manageable with the right preparation. It just takes a bit more awareness on your end, and the right laser technology on mine.

2. The 5 Rules for Safe Summer Laser Hair Removal in Calgary

Follow these and you can absolutely keep up your treatments all summer long:

  • Wear SPF daily on any areas being treated — every single day, not just when you’re at the beach
  • Wait 7 days after sun exposure before your appointment if you’ve had significant time in the sun
  • No spray tans or self-tanner before your session — these sit on top of the skin differently and can cause adverse reactions
  • Avoid heat, sweating, and friction for 24–48 hours post-treatment — this means no hot yoga, intense workouts, or tight clothing right after
  • Apply aloe and SPF after your session and wear loose, covered clothing on treated areas when heading outside

Every client at my studio completes a consent form before each session — we check for recent sun exposure, medication changes, illness, and contraindications like self-tanner. This isn’t just paperwork. It’s what keeps your skin safe.

3. Why My Laser Is Actually Built for Summer

Not all lasers are equal when it comes to summer treatments — and this is where the technology I use makes a real difference.

I use the Clarity II by Lutronic, which has dual wavelength technology including the 1064nm Nd:YAG. This wavelength is deep — it bypasses the melanin sitting in the surface of your skin and goes straight to the hair follicle.

In summer, when your skin has even a little more pigment from sun exposure, shorter wavelengths like the Alexandrite (755nm) or diode lasers become risky — they can’t tell the difference between the melanin in your skin and the melanin in your hair follicle. That’s how burns happen.

The 1064nm Nd:YAG doesn’t have that problem. It’s the gold standard for tanned skin and darker skin tones — and it’s why this laser is used in Miami, Dubai, and hot sunny cities all year round with great results. The built-in cryogen cooling keeps you pain-free through every session and adds an extra layer of safety by managing heat at the skin’s surface.

In Calgary, our summers are intense but short. You’re really only looking at 3 months of strong UV before levels drop back down — that’s only 3 sessions to work around if needed. We can absolutely keep your treatment on track.

4. The Best Areas to Treat in Summer (Hint: Your Bikini Line and Underarms)

This is one of my favourite things to tell summer clients — the most popular summer treatment areas are actually the easiest to treat in summer.

Brazilian and underarm laser hair removal are summer favourites for a reason: these areas are almost always covered, meaning they typically have zero sun exposure. No tan concerns, no adjusting settings — just clean, effective treatment on the areas you most want to be hair-free for bikinis and tank tops.

Legs and arms are the areas where we’re a little more careful — but even then, with SPF and proper prep, we can keep things on track. I adjust settings based on your current skin tone at every session, not just at your first appointment.

5. A Real Client Story: Why Starting Before Summer Matters

One of my clients came in excited to start laser — but she waited until September, thinking she’d just avoid the summer sun entirely and start fresh in fall.

She came in assuming it would take 2–3 sessions to be hair-free. Like most clients, she learned it’s actually 6–8 sessions on average for full reduction. She also missed two months during the Christmas holidays, which pushed her timeline out even further.

By the time summer rolled around again, she was frustrated — she’d been shaving through another entire summer when she didn’t have to be.

“I wish I had just started before summer,” she told me. And honestly, I hear this all the time.

The clients who start in spring are the ones who are hair-free and confident heading into the following summer. The ones who wait are shaving again.

The Bottom Line: Summer Is Not a Reason to Wait

Summer is actually one of the best times to start laser hair removal — especially for Brazilians and underarms. With the right laser, the right SPF routine, and a provider who understands how to adjust for summer skin, there is no reason to put this off.

Calgary summers are short. Don’t spend another one shaving.

At Cool Laser Skin Studio, I use the Clarity II’s 1064nm Nd:YAG for summer clients of every skin tone — and I’ll walk you through exactly what to do to get the best results safely.
