It’s one of the most common conversations I have with new clients:
“I know I want to do something for my skin — but I don’t know if I should do microneedling or a laser facial. What’s the difference? Which one is better?”
The honest answer is: neither is universally better. They’re different tools that do different things — and knowing which one is right for you comes down to your skin concerns, your lifestyle, and what you’re ultimately trying to achieve.
I’ve had both treatments done on myself. I offer both at Cool Laser. And I have strong, experience-backed opinions on when each one wins. Let me break it down for you.
What Is Each Treatment Actually Doing to Your Skin?
Before we compare, let’s get clear on the science — because understanding how each treatment works is what makes the choice obvious.
Microneedling — Collagen Induction Therapy
Microneedling is a specific form of collagen induction therapy. Using the Salient E Pen, I create thousands of precise micro-wounds in the skin — controlled, clean, and intentional. These micro-injuries tell your body that repair is needed, triggering a cascade of healing that produces new collagen deep in the dermis.
This is powerful, direct stimulation. The kind that addresses fine lines, deep lines, pitted acne scarring, and significant texture concerns. It’s also one of the most effective preventative aging treatments available — after 25, when we’re losing collagen every year, a series of microneedling sessions is one of the best investments you can make in your skin’s long-term foundation.
If you want to understand the full science behind how microneedling works, I cover it in detail in what microneedling is and how it works.
Laser Facial — Collagen Therapy, Vascular Treatment & Oil Reduction
A laser facial works differently. Instead of creating physical wounds, the Clarity II emits targeted heat that penetrates the dermis to stimulate collagen — but it also does something microneedling can’t: it targets the hemoglobin in blood vessels, minimizing redness, rosacea, and PIE (post-inflammatory erythema — those flat red marks left behind after acne).
The heat also reduces oil production in the skin, which shrinks pore size and actively treats acne. It builds collagen, but at a slower, more gradual rate than needling. Think of it as a gentler, cumulative approach — with zero downtime and a genuinely relaxing experience.
The Key Differences at a Glance
| Microneedling | Laser Facial | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary mechanism | Physical collagen induction | Heat-based collagen + vascular therapy |
| Downtime | 1–3 days redness/dryness | None — maybe slight pink that fades fast |
| Best for | Scarring, deep lines, aging, texture | Acne, redness, rosacea, PIE, oil control |
| Collagen building | Faster, deeper stimulation | Slower, gradual buildup |
| Pain level | 2–3/10 with numbing | Warm, campfire-like heat — very comfortable |
| Session length | ~75-90 minutes | ~60 minutes |
| Treats active acne | No | Yes |
When I’d Recommend Microneedling
Microneedling is my clear recommendation when a client’s primary concerns are:
Aging skin and prevention — If you’re over 25 and serious about being proactive about collagen loss, a series of microneedling is your foundation. The deeper stimulation builds new collagen faster than any other non-surgical treatment I offer. Not sure how many sessions you’ll need? I break it all down in how many microneedling sessions you actually need.
Pitted acne scarring — Microneedling is one of the most effective treatments for depressed scars. The controlled injury breaks down scar tissue and fills it in with new collagen over time. For this concern, nothing I offer compares.
Deep texture and significant fine lines — If surface-level treatments haven’t moved the needle for your texture concerns, microneedling gets deeper and delivers more dramatic results.
Someone committed to results and okay with downtime — If you’re willing to have 1–3 days of redness and dryness in exchange for real, lasting improvement, microneedling will give you exactly that.
When I’d Recommend a Laser Facial
A laser facial is my go-to recommendation when:
Active acne is a concern — This is the big one. Laser facials are safe and highly effective for treating acne. Microneedling is not recommended for active breakouts. If acne is part of your picture, laser comes first.
Redness, rosacea, or PIE — The Clarity II is attracted to hemoglobin, meaning it specifically targets and minimizes the red vascular lesions that cause rosacea and the flat red marks left behind from acne. After 3–4 sessions, I’ve personally watched stubborn PIE I had for years fade away.
Zero downtime is non-negotiable — If you have an active lifestyle, a big event coming up, or summer is right around the corner and you want to be outdoors without worrying about sun sensitivity, laser facials keep your skin glowing with no recovery required.
New to aesthetic treatments — If a client is nervous, new to skincare treatments, or just wants to dip their toe in, a laser facial is a perfect introduction. Relaxing, comfortable, no needles, and beautiful results.
What the Experience Actually Feels Like
A Laser Facial at Cool Laser
You arrive and I start with a double cleanse and a thorough skin analysis. Then we move into laser toning — the Clarity II emits a warm heat across the skin that honestly feels like sitting close to a campfire. It gives me real-time feedback to make sure we’re hitting the right efficacy for your skin. Afterward, I apply a cooling sheet mask while you enjoy a hand and arm massage. Depending on your skin, I’ll customize with additional masks or extractions as needed. You leave in about an hour, skin slightly pink, glowing, and relaxed. That pink? It settles down fast.
Microneedling at Cool Laser
You arrive, I cleanse and analyze your skin, and then you’ll numb for about 25 minutes — this is what makes the treatment so comfortable. Once the numbing has taken effect, I apply a gliding hyaluronic serum for deep hydration and begin three full passes with the Salient E Pen. You’ll feel warmth and some minor sensitivity on bonier areas like the nose and jaw — nothing more than a 3-4 out of 10. After treatment, I apply Hale Derma and send you home with a full post-care kit with everything you need for the next 72 hours. You’ll be red and pink for 1–3 days, and then your skin begins its transformation.
My Personal Experience With Both
I’ve had both treatments — and I genuinely love them for different reasons.
Laser facials have been a game changer for my PIE. I had stubborn red scarring that wouldn’t budge, and after 3–4 sessions it faded in a way nothing else had managed. It consistently keeps my redness calm and my skin glowing. I also love pairing a laser facial with an AFA Antioxidant Peel for the ultimate glow combination — people always ask what I did.
Microneedling is my personal holy grail for anti-aging. Knowing we lose collagen every year after 25, doing a series of 3–4 sessions annually is non-negotiable for me. It’s visibly improved my fine lines, my overall skin texture and foundation, and helped break up stubborn pigmentation on my face. It’s also made a real difference in some of those deeper red acne spots that laser alone hadn’t fully resolved.
Honestly? My favourite approach is both — and in a specific order.
The Power Combination: Why Both Together Is the Ultimate Skin Strategy
Here’s something most clinics won’t tell you: microneedling and laser facials aren’t competitors — they’re partners.
My favourite protocol for clients who want comprehensive, long-term results is a series of microneedling first, followed by regular laser facial maintenance. The needling builds the deep collagen foundation, addresses scarring and significant texture, and remodels the skin from within. Once that foundation is established, laser facials every 6–8 weeks keep the collagen ticking over, manage redness and oil, and maintain that healthy, even glow.
Think of microneedling as the renovation — and laser facials as the upkeep.
Still Can’t Decide? Here’s My Honest Advice
Choose microneedling if: your main concerns are aging, scarring, texture, or pore size — and you’re okay with 1–3 days of downtime in exchange for deeper, faster results. This is your investment in your skin’s foundation.
Choose a laser facial if: you can’t commit to downtime right now, summer is coming and you want to be outside, your concern is acne or redness, or you’re new to treatments and want to start somewhere comfortable and effective.
Can only afford one to start? If aging, scarring, and texture are your primary concerns, start with microneedling and get the foundation right. Then we can fine-tune and maintain with laser facials after. If downtime is genuinely not possible for your life right now, laser facials will keep your skin glowing and improving until you’re ready to go deeper.
There’s no wrong answer here. Both treatments deliver real results. The right one is simply the one that fits your skin, your concerns, and your life — and that’s exactly what we figure out together at consultation.
